:: INSTRUCTIONS ::
Just click on the games to play, they will automatically create “Microsoft Games” in your PROGRAM FILES, and will add a shortcut to your start menu under Vista_Games so when you want to play them again you don’t have to keep running them where you saved them. Make sure you have Vista.Emulation.DLL in the c:\windows\system32 folder other wise these will not work
To make Minesweeper work:
Extract minesweeper.bat in the directory containing minesweeper.exe
create a shortcut to desktop or something like that
right click on the shortcut
choose properties
Run: select minimize
and enjoy 🙂
just run the .bat file to play the game.

Hi nick, try just Leaving the Vistaemulation.dll in the system32 folder and move the games from the system32 folder to somewhere like My documents and then try it.

hi, i tried to install the purble place games onto my desktop pc (xp), i have put the file into the system 32 file and download game but it is still not working, when the install starts it says that some files are corrupt and to download another copy, any ideas. cheers

Chess used for vista is not possible for windows XP because it uses the new version of direct x that will only work on vista. Microsoft does not plan to update the new Direct X for XP
at least post the chess titans *.bat file so we can play the game since i have rest of the files .

Jonny (and others) has the courtesy to invest his time, skills and resources into porting these Vista games over to XP and hosting them on his site.
Many people have clearly expressed the difficulties, complications (and perhaps even impossibility) in porting Chess Titans over to XP. Yet, you whine, complain and have the audacity to order him to “fix it now” and “give it to you”!
If you think that this is so easy, feel free to fix it yourself! Otherwise, show some respect.

i have just looked up chess titans and looked if there is a differents and i can’t see much difference to shaagchess, its the same and it plays on XP hope this helps….

The downloads work for me, but when I try to download any of the games, only part of the download will complete itself. I just tried to download Solitaire, and I only got 2.97 MB, which I knew wasn’t right. Do I need a download manager? Thanks.

Wow 2nd time this week ok im going to donate my spare time on thursday to remove the games, re-upload them again and then test there download.

Everything is working again, James your Virtual C++ Runtime error my be due to either a graphics card problem or the files have go crappy, I suggest downloading them again due to i have re-uploaded them again 🙂

Inkball is so good, kinda makes up for people not having pinball in vista
I downloaded the InkBall game using the link above. When I try to run the executable (inkball.exe), I get an error “Executable for InkBall Game has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”
If I keep trying for around 10 times, the game finally starts without the error. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Based on the copyright date (2002) in the About box and the fact that this game does not install (in the Vista Games group) like the other 7 games, this does not look like the InkBall game that came with Vista…
Guys I’ve tried re-d/l the files and installed in on a third PC running XP Pro SP2, and still stuck at the Visual C++ Runtime Library error screen…what’s going on?

You can use a binary file editor to remove the “Oct 4 2005” bit from the title bar of some of these games too!

Ok to the problems with Inkball you may need to click it alot of times for it to start i am trying to sort that issue out.
Stanley: The Build of Spider Solitaire is from a Test build of Windows Vista hence the Build date within the Title Bar. There isnt really anyway you can report them. I am working on getting the final builds up and running so just sit tight 😉
So, I downloaded minesweeper (works fine) purble place and inkball.

Richard i havn’t a clue but this is an issue that has been brought up many times across the web mainly the version of inkball is from Windows XP tablet PC edition.

Yes for most games/software , no for some games/software . I think you should not purchase Vista as it is VERY UNSTABLE . And , Vienna , the next computer evolution of Vista will come out in 4 years and will be much more stable ! Hope this helps !

CCCY: I take it you had a bad experience with vista? you know not everyone hates it, it all depends on your hardware really. Most people are fine with XP and are waiting for Vienna but you have to note that its going to be x64 (64bit) not x86 (32bit).

Hmmm…I am puzzled as to why everyone is having all these errors, i have tested them on my Laptop and Family Computer both running XP Pro SP2 and they worked fine well apart from inkball but iv known that lol.
If i had a machine in front of my that had these’s errors generated it would be easier but doing it the generic way just isnt giving me errors. I shall still look in to the matters.

I downloaded VISTA HEARTS for XP. It’s in my program files, but every time I try to run it, a window pops up and tells me “The application failed to start because VISTA.emulation.DLL was not found, reinstalling the application may solve the problem”
What am I doing wrong?
Please make sure the Vista.Emulation.dll is in your c:\\windows\system 32 folder 😉

BTW I do have Vista Business, before switching back to XP Pro I realized to my dismay they don’t work. during my parting with Vista I also happened to create a compilation of all of the retail final vista games into one neat setup file.
Though I’m familiar with C++ I’m not a modder 😛 *If* you do need the final versions of these games to *MOD* them to work under XP I’ll be more than happy to upload them for you 🙂

My god, can anyone please tell me how to get inkball to work. Am using XP service pack 2, hav tried everything, even double clicking for 10mins, nothing, lol, hav put the dll in my sys32 folder,
need to update to Windows XP SP3 I had all kinds of issues with SP2. I’m running all of the games available on two machines both with SP3 and they work fine. Good luck

I was talking to Peter (a current Window X Shrine Member) yesterday about John’s new Vista on XP Games. After trying it out, Peter came up with an idea to create a new ViStart that replaces the “My Video” option with Vista Game Explorer. In reality Window XP start menu never gave us a shortcut to My Videos before ViStart was installed. Hence, I figured out that not many people would miss this newly added feature. As a result to the aforementioned, I created a new ViStart using the latest ViStart Build Program code. (In no case whatsoever, am I taking credit for Lee’s work.) So for those of you who may be interested in this new ViStart feel free to download it here.
PLEASE READ: Be sure to remove the current ViStart on your computer before installing this program.
PS. The code was written in xml, a web based script. Based on your security settings, you may be asked if you are sure you want to run Vista Game Explorer every time you select that option in ViStart (if you are skeptical, feel free to scan for Viruses, Trojans, and Malware). I’ll be sure however, to have this problem fixed in the next release. Nevertheless, like Lucifair, I too have too much school work, so a new release may not be available for a while.

Hi there. I’m not complaining cuz I think it is great that you have offered this to everyone. But I do have a question. On my Laptop with Vista I have Purble Place. On that Purble Place there are 3 different games; Comfy Cakes, Purble Shop and Purble Pairs. But when I installed the Purble Place that you offer onto my Desktop with XP, the purble place only has 2 games; Comfy Cakes and Purble Place. Am I missing something or done something wrong or is it just not possible to get that third game; Purble Pairs? If possible, I really would like to get the 3rd game. It is the whole reason I searched for and downloaded the Vista games. My daughter loves the Purble Pairs game in Purble Place.

hi, first off thanks for all you hard work on these games. i just downloaded the games today and like everyone says, all are working but inkball(which is why i downloaded it in the first place). which is really pissing me off, so i would like to join the fight to get inkball working on xp. i mainly do hacking games and make cracks and patches for other games. i havent done much in os changing but ill try to help. the only thing i need is all the files for inkball and a list of programs to read the game programing for the exe and dll files. i look forward to helping get this game working for everyone.
p.s. thanks again and i am running sp1 so if i can get it to work for me it should work for everyone!
hi again, i was looking at the other files you made that work and relized that there all installers. the inkball installer dosnt work. meaning there is a problem with the installer. so im thinking i quick fix to the inkball program is to manually install it. i havent been able to test this cause i dont have all the .exe, .dll, regkeys and other files for the game. if you could send me all the original files and regkeys i will try a manual install and write a guide for installing if it works. till we can get a working installer for inkball. thanks

the reason inkball probably doesnt work is because it relies on some “pc tablet” component installed in windows, im not sure if XP has a different version to VISTA

Well, when I click Inkball, I get the error the first few times like everyone else in creation reports, but then it starts.
Only problem is that no ink draws in the game. ANyone else had this issue?
i got inkball working in my pc. if you want some proof, head over to kailpogi.deviantart.com. it’s part of my july desktop screenshot.
if you ask me how’d i do that, it’s simple, but not ALWAYS reliable. just make a folder in c:\windows\program files\vista games\ and name it “Inkball” then put the inkball game (as in the inkball installer itself, as in the one that you’ll get from the part 1 of these games) in it. execute/run the file in that folder. it should work. it may take you a couple of times double-clicking it and get the error message but just continue running the game there. not for long, it will run. if you’re lucky, you’ll get it running in one try.

For people having trouble running Inkball:
– if you click the executable and nothing seems to hapen: install journalviewer (http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/journalviewer.html)
– If you get an error report, just double click again. (without closing the windows that open) If you do this right it should work perfectly!

I found the reason of the “C++ Runtime Error.” It is because the system language for non-unicode program is not English. I got the same problem. When I set the language back to English, it works just fine.
But, is there any way to make the game compatible to other languages?

For all you poor souls like me who downloaded this JUST for inkball.
I had the same problem and got it working.
first I created a folder called “Inkball” in the same folder that the other games install into.
then I put the inkball exe in that folder – didn’t work
then I downloaded the “tablet PC journal Viewer” that Tweak37 suggested. then it worked

I am having problems with my computer what happens is that when I try to install any game on my computer it goes to the autorun screen then I click on install it acts like it’s going to install but then nothing happens. Originally I thought that the games i was trying to install weren’t compatible with vista but I was wrong they are but the problem is still happening. So my question was has anyone ran into the same problem and if they did can they tell me how to fix it?

Maybe I wasn’t descriptive enough so i will give an example, I tried install the new command and conquer game which is compatible for vista which of coarse is what i have, anyway getting back to the topic at hand I inserted the cd then the autoplay window came up so I clicked on run then it went to the install window I clicked on install but nothing happened. so once again I would like to know if anyone has run into the same problem and knows how to fix it besides wiping the hard drive and then installing xp.
All other games work except Inkball for me.
Every time I run the game it opens up the Inkball window then promptly displays the MS ‘Executable for Inkball Game has encountered a problem and needs to close.’ etc

Weird…I managed to resolve it (sorta).
I double-clicked the exe as many times as I could within a few seconds. It opened like 10 windows. Then one of them worked but the others all errored.
I then closed them all but the working one and played it. Then when I was finished I closed the working one and ran it again and it loaded straight away.

iv just resentally installed vista on my computer. i came accross the schess titan game and played it and enjoyed it. however i would like to install the chess titan game on xp pro sp2 but when i go and run the file chess.exe a message comes up telling me that it isnt a valled win32 file! what can i do to get the chess titan game to work on xp pro sp2?

then from there run pinball.exe and it will work.
then just right click the same file and select creat shortcut and place it where ever you like! this works because iv tryed it myself!

Chess Titans uses DX10 which XP doesn’t have yet right?… from what I can tell DX10 is likely to be part of the official SP SP3 from microsoft, maybe then Chess Titans will work under XP – assuming DX10 is the only problem here… also I heard no news on the “extras” holdem game… thats a Vista thing too… but I know little about it

Your runtime error happens when your system refuses to use the files…just remove the Microsoft Games folder in “program files” then re-install them again…

Look guys im not going to upload the files to a direct file server due to they cause high bandwidth…
There are many ways to get around a corporate proxy so you shouldnt have a problem..
Reason you all can’t download off rapidshare or megaupload is you either has scrips disabled or the proxy has blocked it…
Go on Google and Type “CGI Web Proxy” and hopefully you will find your answer.

I have all the games apart Freecell, Hearts, Solitare, Spider Solitare & Shanghai all working fine from your download packages however I noticed they dont record the statistics for the game eg, wins, losses, etc. Am I doing something wrong or is there something im missing?
Start a new game after winning one, then quit choosing “Save my game”, and, if you had a positive score, only then statistics get saved (works for me with Solitaire Vegas scroing and Freecell, didn’t try others but the bug must be the same and the behaviour the same). If you quit after an unsolved game or from stats window shown after you win a game, your stats and options are always reset.

InkBall doesn’t have an installer. Just copy the file to Program Files\Microsoft Games\Inkball\.
PS. You need to have handwriting enabled to play Inkball.

I recently reverted back to Windows XP x64 from Vista 64 after growing tired of the networking issues and sluggishness I was experiencing, but while waiting for programs to install I went to fire up freecell and cringed. Thankfully I came across your page and now I’m back to enjoying it in the form I’ve grown used to over the past few months.
You may want to modify your original post to reflect that if you are running Windows XP x64, this will work, but you need to put Vista.Emulation.DLL into the SysWOW64 folder as well.
The Minesweeper will not work for me. It worked before, but it suddenly stopped to work. I have a shortcut on the desktop with the Minesweeper.bak file. I have also choosen minimize on the Run:

Ink Ball did work for me the first time.
Then I tried to play it again
and it kept coming out as

Then I check the directory “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games”
and it did not create a directory for Ink Ball as the other
games. I all ready downloaded the files again and kept doing
the same.

I downloaded the three files O.K. Then I installed just the Solitaire Game to try it. It starts and plays, but it is very slow…
I have a 2.2Ghz processor and 3 GB of RAM… there’s no good excuse that I can think of for the programs sluggish behavour. Also, this edition of solitaire doesn’t have as many Decks as the regular Solitaire Game in Vista. I checked my Laptop computer which has Vista on it to try and find the more recent decks so I could transfer them to this hacked version, but I can’t find ANY decks in the Microsoft Games / Solitaire folder… just the executable and other non related files. Any help you can offer will be appreciated!

Thanks for these games my girlfriend was bugging me for them. All of them go except for of course inkball. My problem seems to be different though, when i double click inkball.exe absolutely nothing happens, not even an error message. Any advice would be appreciated. Anyway as i say, all other games work fine.

1: Install Journal Viewer
2: Follow other people’s instructions
3: If it still doesn’t work. then click inkball.exe as fast as you can (about 10 times) At least 3 of them should work.
4: If you want Chess Titans, too bad. Get some other 3rd party program, because Chess Titans uses DX10

Hasan: The problem with Chess Titans is that it’s for Vista which uses Direct X10 (vista only) making it harder to port it to XP since there is no such thing as Direct X10 for XP.

I really liked this idea of porting softwares exclusive to Vista onto Windows XP, but finding these softwares on the net is a really tiresome and time consuming job. I personally had to waste more than 20 hours of my internet time (in parts ofcourse!!) searching for these softwares on various blogs and forums, and most of it was nothing more than crap (Believe me, I had downloaded more than 3 Gigs of stuff, out of which only some 250 MB was worthwhile).

hey, I noticed in an earlier post that some said it was not and is not possible for Chess Titans to be played on WinXP because of the differences in DirectX but you can now get DirectX 10 for XP and it’s reliable…I’m running on DX 10 now with XP O.o

Hey is there a reason why i cant get the Hearts Statistics window to come up?
I’m getting really frustrated with the sites you put these files on to download. I was only able to download Part 1 from Rapid Share before it told me that I had exceeded my download limit on the rest of the files and would not let me download anymore. Your alternative download host wants me to download something else or enter some number that I don’t seem to have or know where to find.
Anyway to get around this?
Look lynn the number of downloads that you cud’nt make was only simultaneously, as you tried to download more than one at once, they told you as you were exeded yourlimit, but if at the end of one download you tray again (as free user) you’ll bo able to start another download, so just don’t waste your time triing simultaneous downloads, it’ll not work that way untless you pay a premium account or something like that

I noticed that some of the games have version numbers and dates in the window title. Can this be fixed somehow? I’d also like to know if there’s a way to install them and replace the original XP versions instead of creating new shortcuts the first time they are launched.

You can make vista -xp games work individually but u have to copy the emulation .dill into the filesalong with the .exe file

After downloading some games here some months ago, most of them worked properly except inkball. Also there were ugly “v01 oct 04 2005″ on title bars of some games such as Hearts and Purble Place. So i have edited/”repatched” them by using hex editor and resource editor plus some file executable info (from Oberon to Microsoft) etc. I’m sure most of you can do the same or better job as well here but for most end users out there, it can be annoying so i have uploaded some patched vista games included Inkball (executables only)you can download it:

After installing all these Jonny’s Vista games, just download and extract file above and copy each exectuble to its related directory in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Games or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games e.g copy patched Hearts.exe to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Hearts and so on. Also Inkball game will work. Good luck and enjoy

Immense THANKS to all involved who have made these games available also for XP users. I especially adore Shanghai MahJong.
Have not been able to get out of the Runtime errors though, which come at every start-up of this program – one has to click the exe-file three times get it to work, getting runtime error twice and then the prog will open up – but of course I can live with that.
I don’t know anything about C++ and what it does in a computer software. Even if this error can’t be mended, it would be enormously interesting to know why this error turns up and what mechanisms trigger it. I guess there is something in the opening sequence, which seem to be not compatible with XP. Anyone knows why? :-)))

I took a look in Minesweeper.bat, and I noticed that it deletes those files from drive C, but what if it isn’t my home drive ?
(home drive is where you have the folders Program Files, WINDOWS, etc…)
My home drive is D, so my “Documents and Settings” and “Program Files” aren’t in C drive, they are in D.
My friends home drive is E…
Their is also a problem when it starts the file Minesweeper.exe …
And their was also unnecessary lines…

I am looking for what I thought was called spider solitaire but everytime I try downloading it, it´s not the game I´m looking for. The one I want, I can choose up to four suites. I can use all four suites putting lower numbers on top of higher ones, but in order to win, I must stack one suit from king on the bottom to the ace on the top and then they shuffle off to the bottom until I have successfully shuffled each suite off the board.

Has anyone made a more advanced installer that allows you to choose which games to install? I don’t play Inkball or Purble Place, so I usually just delete those after installing. It would also be cool if there was an option to overwrite the original shortcuts with the Vista versions.

Well, it’s been over a year and there’s still no info on how to get Chess Titans working on an XP machine.
I DL’ed the Vista.Emulation.dll and copied it to my system32 file. I copied “all” Chess Titans folders and info from Win7 to XP (en-US; chess.dll; chess.exe; chess.exe.mui; chessMCE; chessMCE.png)but no matter what I do, I can’t install nor play the game.

I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I did note that the version of Hearts.exe that’s on Windows Vista is 618KB whereas the version available on this website is 9.24MB. Why the difference? Superficially, it seems like maybe some of the DLLs the game required were somehow embedded into the EXE, but if that were the case, presumably Vista.Emulation.dll wouldn’t be necessary as it could similarly be included.

I have the vista exacutable file in the system 32 folder. Everything is fun… kinda. I can open InkBall easily!!! BUT! When I open InkBall and try to draw a line, there is no line. It’s like youre drawing a picture in Paint but youre drawing in white so you cant see the picture (the line isnt white in inkball but you can’t see it.) The invisible line doesnt interact with the game at all. Basically when I draw a line it is not there. Does anybody know how to solve this problem!!?!??!?! Thanks! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!

Like someone here, i have had the same error by every second startup shanghai.exe.
It seems to associate with the “SolitaireOptions.xml” in the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\local settings\Application Data\Microsoft Games\Shanghai Solitaire.
2 ways to bypass the Error-Message:
1. startup Shangai trough a bat-file, like Minesweeper.
(see instructions on the top)

You need Microsoft .NET Framework (v. 3.5 SP1) for Chess Titans to work. Don’t download the whole 232MB package — just download and install the “Bootstrapper” (55MB). It will update and add only what’s needed.

Am I the only one who wants Vista Solitaire on XP not because of it’s look but because it saves cash in Vegas scoring when I exit? Johnny, I have a problem with your XP version of that game. In readme file it says something about patch.cmd and some folders I do not have after downloading it. It launches ok but there’s one big issue, that might be connected to these missing files and which makes it useless for me – it saves game state only for a day. When I open it next day it clears all settings and saved score. Can we do something with that?
Oh, and starting in maximized window would be just nice. I figured xml file with settings but I can’t set it there, if I set parameters of window to nearly full screen it just makes it big with stretching all the graphics to an awful look. I also tried to change setting in another xml file in Application Data so it would use Vegas scoring, cumulative score etc but it doesn’t matter what I put in there manually, when I launch the application – it rewrites my changes.
I did all the steps and made sure the .dll was in my System32, but the game does not work ._. I tried executing it from the desktop and My Documents, and neither worked. What shall I do? D:

I whised to play the games from usb-drive on any XP-PC without installing. I used jauntpe and created a portable version. It works very well. The best: Saved games are not be lost after restarting the game 😀

my 4 year old daughter loved to play purble place with her nana. my brother took her computer witch had the game on it and i dont have the game on my computer. have tried for about a week now to get it…….cant. the reason i am tring so hard to get it is cause my mother passed a few months ago and she was the puter wiz. we would love your help in telling me how to get it. thanks a bunch.
hey ..jonny !I have the same problem as many here , i have the vista emulator.dll on the system 32 folder ,..the game(in my case spider solitaire) somewhere else..and still just get a blank screen for a brief period of time and that’s it ..any thoughts..?
Hi! Awesome games I was missing on XP after Vista. Unfortuantely one of the most attractive features (along with unlimited undo levels for card games) – keeping statisitcs doesn’t work, seemingly. I use Vegas score in Solitaire and want to keep this score at all times, but statistics aren’t saved as well as setting UNLESS:
A way to keep your statistics going with Solitaire while keeping a Vegas score is to comply with 3 conditions:
1) Win a game
2) Start new game after a game won (doesn’t matter if you play it)
3) Have a positive score
Then when you exit software using “Exit and save my game”, statistics will be kept. Otherwise (quit in the end of a game following a non-won game, quit in Stats window, having negative money score) the statistics and the options with the look will be lost.
There is another minor glitche I found a workaround for: a card being stuck if you clicked it but then changed your mind. In this case you have to click and drag this card to get it released.
Additionally, I have found a cool “hole” in the game: while keeping Vegas score and playin cards one by one, at the end of the cycle, if you drag the last card on the pile down and to the left, the red cross changes to green circle and then you can turn the pile over and cycle the cards again. Sometimes 5$ will be deduced from the drag move from your balance.
The only time it doesn’t work seemingly is if you left the unsolved game at the end of the cycle and restart from red cross state. Also, sometimes the score would be reset if you quit the game in a non-solved state after you tricked the pile to turn over, even if you comply with the rules above for keeping statistics (e.g. previous game was won), but your settings will be saved at least, and with such a “hole” your score will be not that hardly earned again since this way the win percentage turns from 3-4% to like 70% of all games!
So, it would be cool if all bugs (except the last hole of course) would be fixed but overall, while being careful, one can still enjoy it!

Hi, I am totally new at these things…. I want to download purble place for my daughters computer, I have it on my laptop, but she has xp. Where can I find this .dll file everyone is talking about and how do I put it on her computer? Absolute Rubbish. The Purble Pairs game is missing in Purble Place. The third house which when clicked makes purble pairs playable is missing. Only 2 houses show up after you click on the Purble Place game.
